About SMS

The Salisbury Musical Society (SMS) is an amateur choral society of about 145 members based in Salisbury. The Society was founded in 1923 and has had a series of distinguished Conductors and Presidents; our Conductor is usually the Organist, Choirmaster or Director of Music at Salisbury Cathedral.  The current President is Sir David Willcocks, and our Conductor is David Halls.

We are a registered charity (No.266461) with the aim, as stated rather formally in our Constitution, to “promote, improve, develop and maintain public education in and appreciation of the art and science of music in all its aspects”.

Our season is normally geared to school terms, with concerts typically being given in December, just before Easter, and in early June.  We rehearse on Tuesday evenings and perform in Salisbury Cathedral.

Almost all the works we sing require an orchestra.  For more than 30 years now our regular partner for two concerts each year has been the Chelsea Opera Group Orchestra, and for the summer concert we are joined by Salisbury’s amateur orchestra, the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra.

SMS is a member of "Making Music", the National Federation of Music Societies.
